Russia Comes Third in Designing Supercomputers

A supercomputer with an efficiency of more than 1 trillion operations a second and a hard-disk memory volume of 7680 Gigabyte has been put into operation in Russia, said the Prime TASS. The supercomputer put Russia in the third position on the list of world countries producing powerful supercomputers. Russia overtook the European countries with their leader, Switzerland, and China, the latter being ahead of Russia as far back as in the past year. The information became available on 31 July when Alexander Dondukov, the Russian minister of industry, science and technologies commented upon the inauguration of interdepartmental supercomputer centre formed in the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Alexander Dondukov noticed that designing MVS-1000M supercomputers has been largely supported financially. In the last year only investments from different resources, the Ministry of Industry and Sciences as well as the Russian Funds for Fundamental Inquiries including, exceeded 150 million roubles. The cost of the supercomputer system is 5-10 times as low as that of common foreign samples.

A supercomputer with an efficiency of 5 teraflops (5 trillion operations a second) is planned to be developed in Russia until 2003.

Today the world leaders in designing supercomputers are the USA and Japan. A number of computers developed in these countries has efficiency up to 2-4 trillion operations a second. The Unated States, in particular, anticipate that the efficiency of supercomputers will increase 3 times every 18 months. Before the year of 2003 the USA plan to put into action supercomputer systems having an efficiency of 30 trillion operations a second.
